Widescreen - A newly popular feature in laptops & notebooks, often considered a premium or upgrade feature is a widescreen LCD. Widescreen refers to the aspect ratio of the LCD screen on a notebook or laptop. In computers, a traditional monitor has a 4:3 ratio, where the widescreen LCD has 16:10. This is closer to the aspect of the popular widescreen flat panel LCD HDTV’s, which have a 16:9 ratio. The primary benefit of a wider screen on a laptop or notebook is obvious: more space. If you use multiple applications at once, moving between several windows at a time, a widescreen display will allow you to view more and move more efficiently. When working on a spreadsheet, more columns are visible without scrolling with a widescreen monitor. Also since movies are formatted widescreen, it provides optimal movie viewing (otherwise the film is shrunk and black space/letter box appears at the top and bottom of the screen). The drawbacks are that it makes the laptop larger, and you do lose vertical space. Please visit our selection of widescreen laptops to see some examples.
